Developing talents: Batuque na Caixa inserts young people into the cultural market

The project inserts vulnerable young people into various fields of culture, such as music, theater and visual arts

16.04.24

The Batuque na Caixa project was created in 1999 on the initiative of Clodoaldo Salustiano de Morais, musician, journalist and writer, better known in artistic and cultural circles as Aldo Moraes. The project, of which he is the national coordinator, as it is present in several states, was inspired by his life story.

Aldo says he was a poor boy who lost his father when he was 6 years old. At the time, he dreamed of learning music amid the challenges faced by his mother, who raised 4 children alone, working as a housekeeper. Overcoming these challenges, during his adolescence, Aldo Moraes studied in public schools and later trained as an electrician at Senai.

But after a serious accident, he decided to pursue his dream and found support and recognition through maestro Gervásio Basílio Nunes, who gave him free lessons.

Thus, he began to study composition and literature as a self-taught artist, while attending music festivals in Londrina, Paraná, where he came into contact with great masters from whom he received encouragement to show his work.

In 1994, Aldo won a prize as a composer in Austria and returned from Europe willing to create an action that would bring culture and knowledge to children, teenagers and young people on the outskirts of Londrina.

In 1999, he created the Batuque na Caixa project, which, coordinated by the Instituto Cultural Arte Brasil, implements actions and activities such as donations of food, clothing, toys and school supplies and also holds workshops on music, theater, drawing, plastic arts, literature, dance, school support and social actions for children and teenagers aged 7 to 17.

Goal

From the beginning, the objectives have always been to bring a pedagogical-musical proposal and social insertion to children and young people in a state of vulnerability, social and financial abandonment, who are residents of the city of Londrina, where students are inserted in the most diverse fields of the culture market from formal education to studios, cultural projects, bands and ensembles of various formations, in addition to encouraging civic awareness.

Places where Batuque na Caixa operates

The project, in addition to operating in Londrina, where it serves 320 children and adolescents directly, also operates in the interior of São Paulo, Sergipe and Bahia and in a decentralized manner, where its entire structure is taken, such as musical instruments, equipment, teaching material and everything is offered free of charge to students.

Criteria to participate

The first criterion is the student’s interest in participating. Then, it is necessary to register and, depending on possibility and availability, a certain number of vacancies are opened and filled according to the interest shown by the young person.

But Aldo makes a point of making it clear that, in fact, what is taken into consideration is the state of vulnerability, exclusion and the interest in participating in the proposed activities.

If the candidate for the vacancy is in conflict with the law, the project interferes so that he can fulfill the pending issues and, even, with the support of a lawyer, psychologist and social worker, who are partners of Batuque na Caixa, so that he can effectively continue attending the project.

Achievements

Aldo cites as a victory, throughout the entire history of Batuque na Caixa, the achievement of several awards, such as Itaú Unicef and Retratos da Leitura, both in 2018, among others.
