Fundo Brasil de Direitos Humanos (‘Brazil Human Rights Fund’) invites groups, communities, and indigenous organizations working to defend and promote the rights of indigenous peoples in Brazil to submit proposals for support through the Edital Povos Indígenas Lutando por Justiça Climática (‘Indigenous Peoples Fighting for Climate Justice Call for Proposals’).

Climate justice

According to the Fundo Brasil (‘Brazil Fund’), in recent years, the world has witnessed a series of events highlighting the challenges faced by the current generation in the face of the climate emergency.

Extreme events such as floods, prolonged droughts, intense storms, and heatwaves are growing and becoming increasingly frequent. This directly affects people’s lives, including risks to food security and health issues.

However, indigenous peoples resiliently engage, demonstrating immense adaptability everywhere.

Despite the relatively recent debate on climate change, these peoples have shown over centuries that it is possible to utilize natural resources and inhabit their territories while preserving biodiversity, without affecting ecosystem services and contributing to climate balance, in deep respect and connection with nature.

Indigenous leadership in the climate fight

The overarching goal of this call is to strengthen indigenous peoples and their ways of life in the Amazon and beyond. In doing so, it recognizes the importance and leadership of indigenous peoples and their traditional knowledge in addressing the global climate crisis and promoting nature-based solutions.

This call aims to specifically strengthen activities of indigenous peoples and communities in the field of socioeconomics, valuing production methods based on traditional knowledge that interconnect nature and people and that find their own solutions to climate challenges.

A minimum of  25 projects will be supported, totaling R$1.500.000,00 in donations, benefiting three distinct areas throughout the country. Among these, at least 12 projects will necessarily have to take place in the Amazon and the Cerrado.

The call will support only indigenous groups, communities, movements, and organizations. In some situations, the participation of informal initiatives without CNPJ will be allowed.

Criteria

  • Actions will be valued based on racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual orientation dimensions, including in an intersectional manner, considering how climate change disproportionately affects marginalized and vulnerable groups and how the overlap of different types of discrimination can exacerbate this impact;
  • Priority will be given to projects developed in territories most directly affected by extreme weather events, wildfires, invasions and conflict contexts;
  • Initiatives exclusively focused on professional or educational training, cultural production, welfare support or academic research won’t be supported.

The Selection Committee will indicate which projects will be supported, with the final decision resting with the governance of Fundo Brasil (‘Brazil Fund’).

Proposals can be submitted until 11:59 pm Brasília time on May 7th.

The announcement of results is scheduled for July 27th, on the website and social media of Fundo Brasil (‘Brazil Fund’).
